The Avantgarde crew Garu, Giru and Guru, made room for a few laughs at their feeble firing and gung-ho attempts to attack the enemy, while Belial’s two generals Iaron and Darkgon reminded me of Cyclonus and Scourge from the 1980′s animated Transformers movie. The supporting characters were also well-handled, adding spice to the story along the way without taking off too much focus from the storyline. Belial was also very well-portrayed, reprised in voice by Miyasako Hiroyuki. Tsuchiya Tao did just enough as the Princess of Esmeralda and once again, Miyano Mamoru does an excellent job voicing Zero. Koyanagi Yu’s performance was commendable, having to take on a dual role as the original Ran and Zero in Ran’s body, but I felt Hamada Tatsuomi as Nao was the best character in the film, being able to portray the values of resilience and grit at such a young age. The film revolves around a core group of characters which are not too expansive and complex, yet strong enough to hold their weight, a killer combination given the makers only had 100 minutes to develop every character. I have yet to spot a major flaw in the storyline, which I felt was of comparable standard to the visuals, though something I am still a little confused about is how the Jeanbird was conveniently anchored within the caves of the Anu planet. Although it wasn’t very difficult to understand, I would have preferred to know the film inside out with all the finer script details. I have watched the film only once, raw, as the official Blu-Ray release came without subtitles, with shoddy understanding of the Japanese language. The second instalment in a planned trilogy (the third and final film is due for a winter 2011 release), this film follows Zero as he journeys into a different universe to hunt down the source of the unknown attackers who had unleashed a trio of Darklops Zero on the Land of Light.Īlong the way, Zero will also meet three other heroic beings, modelled after Tsuburaya’s other offerings-Fireman, Mirrorman, Jumborg A, along which they will be collectively known as Ultimate Force Zero. Indeed space has never looked as good as it did in the latest Ultraman Zero movie, recently released on Blu-Ray and DVD by Bandai VISUAL.
